In 2012, Diane Ness, saddened by the new of the closure of yet another textile mill in the Scottish Borders, was inspired to do something to help the textile industry in Scotland. She decided to set up a company that would combine her love of handbags with the long-celebrated history of Scottish textiles and manufacturing.
Four years on, that idea borne of frustration is now Dunmore Scotland, a thriving luxury goods business that celebrates all that is great about Scottish style.
Every piece in the Dunmore Scotland collections is inspired by, designed and made in Scotland. It is our aim to support local businesses and Scottish manufacturing wherever possible. We use authentic Harris Tweed bought directly from weavers on Harris and Lewis and our tartans are sourced from long-standing companies within Scotland.
Using small companies with, in some cases, generations of experience, all Dunmore Scotland pieces are handmade in Scotland. The final step of the process is when our pieces are dispatched to our customers around the world from Dunmore Scotland’s base in the Scottish Borders.
Dunmore Scotland has two main collections and a small bespoke line.
The Heritage Collection uses historic Scottish textiles that are sourced within Scotland. We use Harris Tweed and tartan to create a range of elegantly Scottish pieces that celebrate the rich textile heritage of Scotland. Classic Harris Tweed neutral tones fit happily alongside brighter modern colours and an ever-changing range of tartans to create a collection of handbags, satchels and accessories with a Scottish twist.
The Prestige collection is a range of luxurious leather handbags, in a range of bright colours and leather textures. From metallic clutches to large leather totes, the Prestige collection offers a selection of stylish and elegant leather products to suit every taste and occasion.
An increasingly popular choice for customers is our developing bespoke range. For a small supplement to the standard price, we can make two models of bag in a tartan of the customer’s choice. This has proved a very popular, particularly with Scottish expats looking to celebrate their clan heritage.
We have shipped pieces from our collections around the world, including to the USA, Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. An Oscar-winning actor has been spotted with a piece of our luggage and we are delighted that Scottish actress Ruth Connell, of E4’s Supernatural, acts as an ambassador from the Dunmore Scotland brand.
Four years on from the initial new story that ultimately inspired her to start the business, Diane Ness is delighted with the success so far.
“My aim is to showcase the great products that can come from Scotland and I’m delighted to think of all the little pieces of Dunmore Scotland being carried by our customers around the globe.”
