Inspiring the Brand: The Dunmore Pineapple

Dunmore Scotland takes its name from one of Scotland’s most extraordinary and unique landmarks- the famous Dunmore Pineapple. For those who haven’t heard of it, it’s an elaborate 18th century building, with a single intricately carved stone turret in the shape of this exotic fruit.

The Pineapple was added to the ancestral home of the Earls of Dunmore in 1761 by John Murray (the 4th Earl of Dunmore). It contained a hothouse on the lower level, used, as its name suggests, for growing pineapples. Since then it’s had many uses and owners, and now belongs to the Landmark Trust and can be rented as a holiday home.

Lady Catherine Murray, Countess of Dunmore, is often cited as the driving force of Harris Tweed in the nineteenth century. After inheriting her late husband’s estate on the Isle of Harris, she became instrumental in the promotion and development of this luxury fabric.

During the economic difficulties of the Highland Potato Famine of 1846-7, Catherine had the Murray tartan copied in tweed by local weavers to help alleviate the hardships suffered by the estate. She went on to widen the market by financing and organising training to bring the fabric in line with machine-made materials, and introducing tweed to her aristocratic friends to establish markets in Edinburgh and London.

The Dunmore Pineapple is a symbol of unique design, with links to the expansion of Scotland’s textile industry. And that’s why our brand is Dunmore Scotland.
