In this occasional series of blogs, we look in a bit more detail at the places that inspired the names of some of the pieces in our collection. Today we’re looking at the place that our largest piece is named after – Arisaig.
Arisaig is a stunning spot on the west coast of Scotland, known for its beautiful beaches and stunning views over the islands of Eigg, Muck and Rhum. Located to the west of Fort William, it is an area steeped in history – Bonnie Prince Charlie sailed away from Scotland after defeat at Culloden from nearby Loch Ailort and during World War 2 the area was used as the training ground for the UK Special Operations Service.
More recently the area is best known for its appearance in Dunmore Scotland’s favourite movie Local Hero, providing the sandy beach (above) that is at the heart of the plot between big business and local interest. The train journey from Fort William to Mallaig (stopping at Arisaig) is regularly voted one of the most spectacular in the world and during the summer, you can make it on the Hogwarts Express, aka the Jacobite steam train service.
As an area which is a popular destination for holidaymakers, it’s appropriate that we named our weekend/travel bag after the area. The Arisaig weekend bag is a luxurious piece of luggage that is designed for business or leisure travel. Carried with either leather handles or an adjustable strap, the roomy holdall has a number of internal pockets for safely storing smaller items. Each Arisaig holdall is handmade in Scotland and we can’t name names, but we’ve spotted an Oscar winner with one.
