It’s nearly August and that can mean only one thing for those of us who live in the Edinburgh area – yes, it’s Festival time!
The first Edinburgh International Festival took place in 1947, with the aim to ‘provide a platform for the flowering of the human spirit’ by bringing people and artists together from around the world. The Festival Fringe began the same year when a number of theatre groups came to the festival univited and staged their own shows.
Over the last 70 years this small event has grown to become a festival of festivals – the original International Festival and Fringe, the Book Festival, the Art Festival and all of this is literally topped off by the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, which takes place high up on the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. The events are brought to an end by a spectacular fireworks display which uses Edinburgh Castle as a launch-pad and is visible from across the city and beyond.
People travel from across the world to perform and spectate and Edinburgh in August is a busy and exciting place to be.
